MMORPG.com Interview with Stuart Zissu
MMORPG.com have posted an interview with DAoC’s producer, Stuart Zissu, discussing the recent anniversary, community and more.
MMORPG.com:Why does the three realm break down in Dark Age of Camelot work so well? How come we have not seen it replicated as much in MMOs as it probably should have been?
Stuart Zissu:There are many reasons why the three realm system works, but I think the biggest is the self-balancing. When one realm gets too far ahead, it’s only a matter of time before the other two realms knock them down a notch. This allows for an ever changing and engaging RvR gamespace and reduces the feeling of hopelessness that can occur with a 2 sided conflict. With only 2 sides, if one gets too far ahead, it is tough for the underdogs to make a comeback.
As to why we haven’t seen three realm RvR more, I think that is because of the difficulty that is inherent with it. It is a lot of hard work to balance a game for two sides, let alone three. Even after 10 years, we are still tweaking things here and there.
MMORPG.com:The community still remains very active in DAOC, how is it working with them over all these years and managing the veteran players?
Stuart Zissu:The players are key to a game like this: they keep the game going, they make RvR dynamic and exciting, they tell us what they like and what they don’t like, and they are why we are still here. We have multiple ways to collect feedback from our players, and whether they believe it or not, we do see every single one that comes across our plates. Many of our changes to the game have come directly from players or as a result of what players were discussing on boards. We also watch and listen to what players are doing and saying in game to get an idea of how we can make things better. In the end, the players are our best resource.

Topic of the Week wants to know if you’ve made any New Years Resolutions?
Somewhat off topic and not really game related for this week. Here’s hoping that you and yours had a very Happy Holiday Season, whatever you may celebrate. I personally celebrate Christmas, but am not really big on New Years. I usually just spend the day with family cooking, eating and watching movies. I did however, make a few New Year’s Resolutions to become more organized and manage my time better. In game, I plan on getting my druid to RR10! So watch out to you Albs and Mids because for me to do that, there has to be a group of Hibbies in front of me doing the killing ๐
Topic of the Week wants to hear about your New Years Resolutions. Did you make any? Do you have any that are game related?
Do you have any good topic ideas? If you have one you’d like to see posted, please drop me a line!

Topic of the Week wants to know you’re thoughts on the alternative rulesets?
I’ve never rolled a character on Mordred. Something about being rolled at practically any place, by any one just didn’t appeal to me. Although for a lot of players, it provided countless hours of entertainment and camaraderie. That server was home. Now sadly, it is all but dead, and because of the way the servers were set in the beginning, the characters can’t be transferred to Ywain. Many of the players are frustrated and angry to say the very least.
Gaheris faces the same dilemma. On Gaheris, other than the occasional dual, there is no PVP. In the Frontiers, there are no towers, only the main keeps, and they are occupied by high end mobs. Those mobs have to be defeated and they drop seals that the players collect and turn in for realm points.
The other thing that makes these servers unique is that they lack the realm specificity that Ywain carries. On the alternative rulesets, you can have characters on all 3 realms and mix certain gear between them, you can roam each other’s lands and capital cities, log off, switch realms, and log right back on with no timer restrictions. A cleric and a hero can run together and assist each other.
Right now, both of these servers are suffering from a severe lack of population and feel that the game developers aren’t doing enough to keep their servers alive. So many have said they would gladly drop all their gear if they could transfer their characters to Ywain. For many, moving to Ywain meant a total restart to the game, and abandoning the characters that they often worked years on developing. It meant abandoning the houses they put up, the gear and items they collected over the years, and the plat they earned. None of it could be moved to Ywain. So there it sits on a dead server. Hard to trade for the Ywain equivalent so, you start again.
Topic of the Week asks: Have you played on the alternative rulesets? Do you think anything can be done to revive those servers?
Do you have any good topic ideas? If you have one you’d like to see posted, please drop me a line!
